With more companies in the Gulf shifting to remote or hybrid hiring processes, Zoom interviews have become the new normal. Whether you are based in Dubai, Riyadh, Doha, or applying from abroad, you will likely be asked to attend an interview over video.
A Zoom interview can feel less formal than meeting in person, but do not underestimate it. Your communication, appearance, and setup still play a big role in the impression you make. Here is how to prepare and succeed in your next Zoom interview.
1. Test Your Tech in Advance
Nothing throws off a good interview like technical problems. A day before your interview:
Test your internet connection
Ensure Zoom is updated and working
Check your webcam and microphone
Have a backup device ready if possible
Use a headset or earphones to improve audio clarity and reduce background noise. Do a mock call with a friend to spot any issues early.
2. Choose a Quiet, Clean Space
Pick a location where you can stay undisturbed for at least 30 to 60 minutes. Make sure the background is clean and clutter-free. A plain wall or tidy room works best.
Avoid sitting in front of windows or mirrors that can reflect light awkwardly. Let the light face you from the front, not the back, so your face is well-lit.
3. Dress Professionally
Just because you are at home does not mean you should dress casually. Wear what you would wear to an in-person interview. For most roles in the Gulf, this means business formal or smart business casual.
Looking sharp not only shows professionalism, but it also helps you feel more confident and focused.
4. Arrive Early and Stay Calm
Log in at least 5 to 10 minutes before the scheduled time. This gives you a moment to settle in and handle any last-minute technical issues. Have a glass of water nearby and turn off notifications on your phone or computer.
Greet the interviewer with a smile and a friendly tone. Just like in person, your first impression matters.
5. Look at the Camera, Not Just the Screen
To create better eye contact, look directly at your camera lens when speaking. It may feel unnatural at first, but it helps the interviewer feel more engaged with you.
If you constantly look at the screen or yourself, you may appear distracted. Practice keeping your eyes level with the camera before the interview.
6. Keep Your Body Language in Check
Body language still matters on video. Sit up straight, avoid fidgeting, and keep hand gestures controlled. Nod occasionally to show you are listening and understanding.
Use natural expressions and speak clearly at a moderate pace. Since delays can happen, pause briefly after questions to ensure you do not talk over the interviewer.
7. Keep Notes Nearby — But Don’t Read from Them
One benefit of Zoom is that you can keep your notes nearby. You can list your STAR interview stories, role-specific talking points, or questions to ask at the end.
However, avoid reading directly from your notes. Refer to them only when needed, and stay conversational. It is obvious when someone is just reading, and it hurts your engagement.
8. Prepare Your Surroundings
Inform your household or roommates about your interview time so you are not interrupted. Close other apps or browser tabs to prevent distractions or accidental notifications.
Mute yourself when not speaking if the interview involves multiple participants or background noise.
9. Follow Up After the Interview
Send a short thank-you email within 24 hours. Mention one or two specific things you appreciated about the conversation, and briefly restate your interest in the role.
Following up shows professionalism and keeps your name fresh in the interviewer’s mind.
Zoom interviews are here to stay, and being good at them is a skill every Gulf job seeker should master. With a little preparation, the right environment, and clear communication, you can leave a strong impression even from behind the screen.
Treat it like a face-to-face meeting, stay composed, and let your personality and strengths shine through. The more you practice, the more confident you will become in landing your next opportunity online.
